Red flags that mean you could get divorced

Some people get divorced for very clear reasons that no one could deny. Perhaps they catch a spouse cheating on them, for instance, or perhaps it's an abusive relationship. They know, in a heartbeat, that it's time to get divorced.

For many, though, things happen slowly. It's a bit more subtle. They may not know if they should end the marriage, but they know that something isn't right. Here are a few red flags to watch out for. If you see them in your marriage, it could mean you are destined for divorce.

1. Your spouse is selfish.

To your spouse, your feelings do not matter. They only care about their own. They do things that they want, no matter how it makes you feel. They have no interest in the things that are so important to you. They only want to talk about themselves.

2. Conversations turn into complaining.

When you used to talk, you would sound affectionate and caring. You'd tell each other how much you loved each other. Over time, conversations turned into little more than complaining. Now, the two of you rarely talk except to complain about what the other is doing -- spending too much money, not getting things done around the house, not helping with the children, etc.

3. You start spending extra time apart.

Time apart is not a bad thing for a couple. You may feel like you need some alone time. However, it can go too far. If your spouse starts leaving the house to spend time with friends and never invites you, so you rarely see each other, it could mean something is wrong. The same is true if your spouse starts making excuses to spend extra time at work.

4. Little insults become common.

Saying something insulting in the heat of the moment is one thing. Many couples apologize and recover from it. When you have a problem is when little insults happen constantly. They're just how you talk to each other, and they really demonstrate how you feel about one another.

5. The relationship lacks communication.

You have to communicate, especially when things are not going well. It's a critical part of any relationship. If you can't talk about things -- what bothers you, what you want out of life, how you feel -- then it can cause serious problems. Miscommunication can also lead to fights and disagreements that never needed to happen.

What now?

Have you seen these red flags in your own relationship? Do you think that divorce is in your future? You need to prepare for it, and that means you must know about all of the legal options you have and the steps you can take.
