How can I leave a toxic relationship?

Toxic relationships are extremely complex situations. In most cases, the person being emotionally abused is aware of the ways that they are negatively affected by the other person. However, they are often so consumed by the relationship that they are unable to see the situation clearly.

They may blame themselves for the way their partner is behaving toward them. They may also believe that emotions such as anger, jealousy and control are ways of expressing love. This is simply not the case. If you are feeling scared of your partner of their behavior causes you distress, you should take steps to remove yourself from the relationship. The following are steps you can take toward doing this.

Work on your self-esteem

Those with low self-esteem cannot see situations involving themselves objectively. They will believe that they are the cause of negative things happening in their life, or that they are deserving of abusive behavior. No one should have to deal with abuse. Going to therapy could help you to build up your self-esteem so that you have the motivation and confidence to leave the relationship.

Work on financial independence

You may also feel that you cannot leave a relationship because you are financially dependent on your partner. You should set up your own bank account so that you can save and move on independently.

Gain a protective order

Many people fear what will happen if they leave their partners. If you have been subject to psychological or physical abuse, you can take action to gain a protective order.

Protective orders help ensure that your ex does not get into contact with you. If you want to get out of a toxic relationship, you should consider putting a protective order in place.
