Does cheating mean the end of a marriage?

No relationship is perfect. All couples go through difficult periods, where either they fail to connect on an emotional level, or they have lost touch physically. External events such as the loss of a job or financial stresses can also lead to challenges in a relationship which may lead to one spouse to seek refuge and connection elsewhere.

A surprising number of married couples are unfaithful at some point in the relationship at some level. But since infidelity is such a taboo subject, it is rarely discussed outside of the relationship. If either you or your partner has cheated, you may wonder if this is a sign of the beginning of the end for your marriage. The following are some things you should consider before deciding to divorce.

Has the person expressed responsibility and regret?

The unfaithful person must acknowledge what they have done. If they do not do this, there is no way for the relationship to move forward and for healing to take place. The person should also express regret for what they have done and be willing to talk about the reasons why it happened.

Will the infidelity happen again?

Infidelity usually points to something that is lacking in the relationship. For example, if a spouse had an emotional affair, it may have been because they are feeling unloved or disconnected in their marriage. It is important to talk through these issues, so they can be solved. After this, both spouses should establish clear boundaries for the future.

If you believe that your marriage has fallen apart after an affair, and you want to file for a divorce, you should consider all options before doing so.
