Tips for divorcing a narcissist

Narcissists can often be difficult to identify because of their ability to hide their true character. Since narcissists are often portrayed glamorously in movies, many people have a distorted idea of the traits of a narcissist. Those who have narcissistic traits are believed to make up .5-1% of the population.

If you believe that the person you are divorcing is a narcissist, it may be because they have recently revealed to you their true colors. Many narcissists enter relationships by acting very intensely. They will be quick to sing your praises and may be overly romantic in the honeymoon phase. However, when even minor problems start to appear in a relationship, a narcissist may become hostile or extremely defensive in response to criticism. The following are some tips for navigating a divorce when you are married to a narcissist.

Don't try to compromise

Narcissists, by definition, have impaired empathy. This means that they have very little regard for how anyone else feels, whether the person is their spouse or their children. They will, however, want to feel that they have won. Therefore, they may try to gain custody or assets just to feel that they have succeeded. This is why you should stand your ground and refuse to compromise with a narcissist.

Be methodical

Narcissists are good at using emotion to cloud perspective and manipulating others. Therefore, you should try to stick to the facts. Keep copies of all documents and communications. This way, you will have all the evidence you need to get a fair outcome.

Divorcing a narcissist can take an emotional toll on even the most rational and stable people. By being organized in your divorce process, you will have the best chance of success.
