Child support modifications due to changes in circumstances

Most parents want what is best for their children. Parents try to provide their children with the proper home environment and essentials that will gear them toward proper development. Custodial and noncustodial parents in Maryland may need modifications to child support due to changes in life circumstances.

There are several different situations after a divorce that can impact income and hinder the ability to provide for one's child. A decrease in income or increase in responsibilities can significantly impact the need for a child support modification. Whether the parent is custodial or noncustodial, he or she may not be able to provide for the child or children and may seek to either increase or decrease the amount set in an existing court order.

As rewarding as having a child can be, parenthood also comes with many financial obligations. Parents need financial stability to provide a home, food and proper education for their children. Children may also face needs such as braces, eye procedures, ear tubes and/or tonsil removals that were not foreseen when the child support was determined. The noncustodial parent may also have other children through remarriage with these types of needs that may impact his or her ability to adequately pay child support.

Parents in Maryland who have had a change in their financial circumstances may have many questions and concerns regarding a possible modification to their child support. It may be beneficial to seek legal counsel on this situation for the hardships they are facing. An experienced attorney can increase one's odds of obtaining a more suitable outcome with ongoing support and advice through the modification process.
