Preparing for a child custody hearing

Entering a court room can feel eerie, especially when the custody of a child is at stake. Despite the constant clashing throughout the divorce battle, most parents dread this aspect and the detrimental effect it may leave on their child or children. Knowing how to adequately prepare for a child custody hearing can hopefully lessen the emotional blow and allow Maryland parents to prepare for the best possible outcome.

Having the right information not only aids in the case preparation, but it also allows the parent to enter the child custody hearing with confidence. Before entering any courtroom, it is advised to have all arguments prepared along with possible answers to any questions the judge may ask. It can also be helpful to bring an entourage of people such as babysitters, teachers or coaches to help support your claims of being a five-star parent.

Court cases involving a family matter are usually presented in a much smaller setting compared to those involving a criminal matter. Throughout any given day, multiple cases are heard within the courtroom, so parents should expect multiple testimonies within a limited time frame. Parents, children and any witnesses are given an opportunity to testify and form an opinion on which parent is best suited for the child. In most cases, an immediate decision of the custodial parent is made by the judge along with a visitation schedule for the non custodial parent.

Maryland parents who are approaching a child custody battle are advised to speak with an experienced legal counsel who can provide them with more information on what to expect. The thought of entering a courtroom alone can be frightening and overwhelming, especially when the well-being of your child or children is at stake. With proper advice and case preparation, a parent will be in the best position to win custody of their child or children.
