High-asset divorce rates spike after the holidays

For many Maryland couples, spending time together during the holidays is something less than joyful. When a marriage has been in trouble for some time, having to spend more time together in the weeks between Thanksgiving and New Years can highlight marital difficulties. That leads to a spike in high asset divorce cases in January.

Often, spouses have already made the decision to divorce prior to the holiday season, but want to avoid ruining the holidays for the rest of the family. In some cases, they may want to give things one last try and feel that the holidays are a good time to refocus on family and togetherness. In many cases, however, those efforts backfire, and one or both spouses emerge from the holiday season with a renewed commitment to seek a divorce.

Delaying a divorce filing is not always a bad thing. In many cases, holding off on the filing gives spouses more time to gather the necessary financial information. It also allows time to begin planning the next steps, including finding new housing arrangements, thinking through various child custody possibilities and more. Having these details already in place can make the divorce process far easier to manage.

For those in Maryland who feel strongly that a high asset divorce will be high on their list of New Year's resolutions, the best place to begin is by scheduling an appointment with a divorce attorney. He or she can help guide spouses through the earliest steps of the divorce process. Early preparation can greatly improve the overall divorce experience, which can reduce stress and strife for all involved.
